The First Lady spoke this morning at the State Department at the International Women of Courage award ceremony.

“Together, we must declare that the era of allowing the brutality against women and children is over,” said Melania Trump, urging women not to be “afraid to fail.”

The 13 honorees hailed from Bangladesh, Botswana, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Niger, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkey, Vietnam and Yemen.

Mrs. Trump applauded the honorees as “true heroes,” saying they’ve “fought on the frontlines against injustice.”

The First Lady declared that “we are all ultimately members of one race. The human race.”

The State Department’s annual International Women of Courage award honors women who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in acting to improve others’ lives, according to the department website.

More than 100 women from more than 60 countries have been honored since 2007.
