There are those defining moments in a country’s history that ultimately explains who we are as a people, and on Wednesday U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley directly confronted the Russian Bear with an impassioned address at the UN, following the brutal chemical attack in Syria.
The dramatic moment quickly unfolding within the Security Council Chamber as Ambassador Haley calmly stands looks directly at a seething Russian Ambassador and holds up photos of dying woman and children, and forcefully declares: “Men, women, the elderly, and children gasping for their very last breath, and as first responders, doctors, and nurses rushed to help the victims, a second round of bombs rained down. They died in the same slow, horrendous manner as the civilians they were trying to save.”
The Ambassador pauses as if to allow her words to take hold within the silent chamber, and with a measured tone she asks the Russian Ambassador: “How many more children have to die before Russia cares?”
She ended her address with this ominous warning. “When the United Nations consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action.”
The direct confrontation by Ambassador Haley singling out Russia as the culprit behind the curtain, was no doubt dramatic however reminiscent of another defining moment within our history which brought America to the brink of war, when another US Ambassador named Adlai Stevenson glared directly across the room towards his counterpart Ambassador Zorin, and demanded; “Mr. Zorin, let me ask you one simple question. Do you, Ambassador Zorin, deny that the U.S.S.R. has placed and is placing medium and intermediate-range missiles and sites in Cuba? Yes or no? Don’t wait for the translation, yes or no?”
The Russian interpreter attempting to answer Stevenson responds: “‘I’m not … I am not in an American courtroom, sir, and therefore I do not wish to answer a question that is put to me in the fashion in which a prosecutor does. In due course, sir, you will have your reply.'”
Ambassador Stevenson glaring at Zorin responds: “I am prepared to wait for my answer until hell freezes over, if that’s your decision.”
Ambassador Stevenson’s a Democratic spoke those indelible words during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crises…which simply illustrates why America must always be vigilant.
